Review: MAC Pigment in Cornflower

For the longest time, my preference for having ALL my cosmetics in palettes prevented me from trying MAC pigments.  I HATED the idea of having the colors separate, or compromising the glitter by pressing it.  I finally gave in, and tried Cornflower, now that I have at least two other palettes, and a legion of loose eyeshadows cluttering up my vanity outside the six palettes of de-potted eyeshadows.

I would not classify this as one of the easier pigments to work with. Cornflower is a beautiful periwinkle blue, with a vibrant lilac and silver sparkle. It shows up best wet, as the blue  base and the lilac shimmer tend to get lost when applying dry.

I’m a little disappointed in this, after working with it.  You NEED to apply it wet for vibrancy, but if you blend ANYTHING overtop, it dulls it again!  Usually I like to foil shadows, or apply wet, to the entire lid, as a base, and then use darker and lighter colors to pat contours over top.  You CAN do that over cornflower, but you are left with a fairly muted blue-gray, rather than the initial vibrant sparkly periwinkle.

I DO like that this seems to be less clumpy than some MAC pigments.I haven’t had any issues getting it evenly on the blush, like, say, the recent LE Crushed Metal pigments——that would NOT adhere to the brush, except in flakes, unless you applied it wet, or pressed the pigment in a pan, first.  There’s definitely a learning curve to mac pigments, and while these are one of the easier and prettier shades to work with, I can understand why some makeup users prefer to avoid it.

I didn’t have issues getting it to adhere to the skin, or with it fading.  It wore about as well as any loose/mineral eyeshadow, or pigment.  It’s definitely more fragile to work with than MAC’s normal eyeshadows, though you can achieve beautiful effects, and I LOVE it mixed with nail polish.

Recently MAC changed their pigment packaging. I don’t own any of the old packaging for contrast, but I’m not unhappy with the new packaging.  I wish the lid had more threads-it’s rubbery feeling for good traction, but it doesn’t screw closed as much as most makeup packaging.  I worry about it coming apart in a purse or bag.  There’s a little plastic tab that sits over the pigment, after you take the lid off, to prevent accidental messes.  I do like that, though I wish the jar was a bit shorter, less easy to tip over. I’m VERY careful handling this packaging.

Swatches are applied wet, and dry, for contrast.
